Georg Baselitz in the Dresden Picture Gallery of the Old Masters: Dresden Women

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

This presentation, designed by the artist and his wife, contains in particular works, which were created within a strong controversy with Dresden and its history. The strength of choice is the thematic emphasis – not seen like this before and different from other survey exhibitions.

In central position in the Semper Gallery, in the Gobelin Hall, two big groups of works will be shown from the oeuvre of Georg Baselitz from 18th January to 27th February 2010.

The main work about the German history absorbs a defining event, not only in the memory of the artist: the destruction of Dresden and the in a fire apotheosis flashing end of the Second World War.

Attached to this exhibition core are presented in the adjacent rooms paintings and drawings such as “Evening Meal in Dresden” and “The Bridge Ghost’s Supper”. They show as well the reference of Baselitz to the Christian picture tradition as his artistic role models, among others Edvard Munch and the artists of the BRÜCKE.

Winter Joy in the Surroundings of Dresden

Moritzburg-kleiner in

Not only Dresden has to offer a lot during the winter months, but also the palaces and landscapes in its surroundings. Thus, the hunting lodge of Augustus the Strong provides besides a charming landscape, the paradise in a nutshell (little pheasant castle), a permanent exhibition about the courtly hunt now also a show about the German-Czech cult film “Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella”.

The Baroque palace served in the 1970s as a festal film set of the popular fairytale film. The show illuminates not only the magical backgrounds of the Cinderella story, but also presents original historical costumes and requisites. Therefore, first a tour with DresdenWalks in Dresden and afterwards up to a Baroque fairytale world.

Amazonia - Native Americans of the rainforests and the savannas

Friday, September 25th, 2009

The Japanese Palais presents this special exhibition on an area of 800 sq.m. with an overview of the different cultural landscapes in Amazonia. It thematises not only the origins and distinctivness but also the current situation of the natives of Amazonia. The exhibits come explicitly from Saxon collections. Next to cultural witnesses of long lost tribal cultures one can see pieces of tribes which were contacted for the first time just a few years ago. One basic concern of the exhibition is to point out that the preservation of the cultural diversity is very important, since the many small tribal cultures of the Amazonia also belong to the cultural heritage of humankind. 29th April 2009 to 27th March 2010
