The Saxon Switzerland, to the south-east of Dresden, is one of the most spectacular mountain landscapes in Germany. Truly it fascinates hikers, climbers, artists and tourists with its bizarre sandstone mountains in combination with the Elbe and a rich fauna and flora.
Our day trip starts right in the national park of the Saxon Switzerland which is the Bastei, the most famous sight of the area. Here you can enjoy the panoramic view from the stone bridge before the tour continues to Königstein which is well known for its former mountain fortress. Today it is an open-air military museum. Your guide will tell you more about its history. For example how the Saxon Wettin Dynasty sought refuge behind the thick walls during times of war or how the treasures of the Dresden museums were saved there during WWII.
Complete the excursion with a boat tour to Pirna, a town which calls itself the ‘Entrance gate to the Saxon Switzerland’, impresses with its market place, the city hall and the surrounding bourgeois houses.
Alternatively, it is also possible to include the visit of Pillnitz, the former summer residence of the Wettin Royal Family instead of the boat tour and Pirna.
